A pair of recent car accidents in Denver sent two people to the hospital and left local police searching for drivers who fled the scenes of the crashes on foot.
Dmitri Rumschlag, the 31-year-old owner of Z Cycle Shop in Capitol Hill, was seriously injured in a hit and run accident on Dec. 3, according to a Fox 31 report. Rumschlag remained in critical condition and was still on a ventilator more than a week later, the local news outlet said.
Witnesses told police officers that they saw two men run from the pickup truck that caused the crash, which reportedly may have been stolen. Runschlag’s family has offered a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
Meanwhile, a Dodge Durango collided head-on with a van at South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue on Dec. 11. The driver of the Durango also fled the scene of that crash while the van driver was transported to a nearby hospital with serious, but not life-threatening, injuries.
More than 3,600 hit-and-run accidents have been reported in Denver this year, according to data compiled by The Denver Post. That is an average of more than 419 per month and nearly 14 per day. The crashes most commonly occur between the hours of 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Legal Rights in Hit-and-Run Cases
Anyone who is injured in a car accident in Colorado has the right to seek compensation from those responsible, regardless of whether it is a hit and run or a multi-car pileup on a busy highway. A seasoned Denver auto accident lawyer can help you identify those responsible.
Drivers in Colorado owe others on the road a legal responsibility to operate their vehicles in a reasonably safe manner. That means complying with traffic laws and refraining from dangerous activity like aggressive driving and drinking or texting behind the wheel.
A driver that does not live up to this responsibility is likely to be liable for any accidents that happen as a result.
